Ian has been a keen angler for as long as he can remember. He spent his childhood fishing from small boats in and around Langstone Harbour with his dad.
In 2011 Ian decided to get his skipper qualification that allowed him to take passengers and turn his passion for fishing into his career choice.
This followed years and years of Ian being a steel erector and a fabricator/welder.
Since gaining these qualifications, Ian became a powerboat instructor and an RYA cruising instructor motor.

Bex grew up in Scotland, and spent her childhood around the commercial fishing boats in Scrabster. In 2001, Bex moved to Southampton with her family. Matt (one of our other skippers) took Bex fishing one day in 2005 and this is where her passion for Fishing, boats and the water started.
As soon as possible Bex gained sponsorship and worked her way to gaining qualifications to become a skipper, whilst working on local charter boats to gain experience. As well as this, Bex also crewed on deliveries of vessels such as Sunseekers, delivering these boats with a team to anywhere around Europe.
Once the qualifications were gained, Bex had a variety of jobs including: Harbour taxi driver, berthing master, Assistant harbour master and then became a Self employed charter skipper.
In 2015 Bex became a powerboat instructor. Naturally, she progressed to Advanced powerboat instructor and then on to Cruising Instructor and recently Yachtmaster Instructor Power.

Matt is one of our relief skippers. He has been skippering with Kelley’s Hero for the last 8 years. Matt has been a keen fisherman for as long as he can remember, both on the shore and on the boat. Before working with Kelley’s Hero, Matt has skippered in the area since 2013. Locally Matt has fishing with different angling clubs, and once a year he used to enjoy a holiday to Ireland to enjoy fishing in the Skate fishing festival. He did manage to catch a couple of monsters whilst fishing there.

Karl has been brought up around The Solent and is one of our relief skippers. His dad was a commercial fisherman, meaning that fishing is in Karl’s blood. As soon as he was able, he was working on small trawlers and potting boats in the area. Other roles that Karl had in the area was, Harbour taxi driver in Chichester, and a part of the team at Langstone Harbour Board.
This love for fishing, boats and the water, goes back to Karl’s grandad and further. Karl’s grandad even built his own boat.
In 2021 Karl joined Kelley’s Hero as a skipper. You will see Karl on occasional weekends, as he is busy working in the marina or very early in the mornings, when he is tasked to fuel the boats up.
In October 2023, Karl gained his Yachtmaster offshore certificate, and is now qualified to go further afield on our trips.
Years experience operating in The Solent area (including the channel): 24 Years.
Jess moved to England in 2015, where she crewed with Bex on passenger boats operating tours in Beaulieu River. As well as this, Jess crewed on Kelley’s Hero.
In 2016, Jess moved back to Scotland to have her daughter.
August 2022, saw Jess move back to England and get back on to the boats and gain her skippers ticket. Even though Jess is newer to this than the others, her natural ability shines through. As well as crewing and skippering on Kelley’s Hero, Jess also crewed for the bigger passenger boats in the harbour.
Since moving back to England, Jess has grown a new love for fishing and has even found her competitive streak.
